YLCC was set up in March 2015 by Kate Horsfall and Judith Worrall, two good friends who wanted to set up a club just for women. The intention was to encourage ladies of all ages and abilities to get on their bikes and have fun whilst at the same time getting fit and meet new friends.
The Yorkshire Lass Cycle Club was born and in just a few short months the club had over 60 ladies. YLCC are now a club of over 100 ladies and are going from strength to strength with three very successful sportive’s under their belts.
In early 2018 Judith stepped down from her responsibilities within the club to concentrate on her ever expanding family, Jude still remains a much valued member of the club and is still very much involved in the organising of the Yorkshire lass Charity Sportive.
Kate now drives the club forward with a team of lasses supporting her.
Kate is from Wetherby and having started out mountain biking with her family she took the plunge getting her first road bike in September 2014 and caught the bug very quickly! She completed her first 100K for Ride the night in London in May 2015 and then went on to complete her first 100 miles in the Tour de Mon, Anglesey that same year, something she never would have dreamed possible when she first started. Since then the two friends have cycled many miles together. Kate has achieved many things on 2 wheels she is proud of including cycling Bealach na Ba in the Scottish Highlands, cycling 370K down the East coast of Brazil in 2017 and completing London to Paris in 2018 with 4 other Yorkshire Lasses, clocking up 230 Miles in just 3 days. Both of these challenges were for Women V Cancer. More recently she cycled with the Yorkshire Lasses in Majorca and conquered the well known Sa Calobra climb.
2019 looks set to be another fabulous year on 2 wheels!
Kate Horsfall- Club Founder/Chair
Jude is from Thirsk has been riding many years. Jude began cycling to get fit after losing weight and soon caught the cycling bug too. She has gone on to cycle all over the world raising money for Women V Cancer in India, Cuba, Tanzania, Vietnam & Cambodia and Brazil.
Jude and Kate have ridden Ride the Night London four times – once was on a Tandem!
2017 saw the Yorkshire Lasses being Yarn bombed by the famous Thirsk Yarn bombers, they were adorned by very colourful headwear whilst raising funds for Women v Cancer charities.
In September 2017 Jude and Kate cycled in Brazil with club member Ali Tiffin riding for Women v Cancer Challenges.
Together they laughed and cried their way around Brazil climbing many mountains. With sweat, blood and tears they mastered the ride. In 2018 a group of YLCC Lasses tackled the mountains of Majorca and the iconic London 2 Paris ride. This year they return to Majorca as it was so much fun!
You will often see a sea of blue at sportives – the lasses wear their kit with pride and are full of support and encouragement for each other.
Behind every successful club are its members and the club could not run without its lasses. Many offer to lead rides, back mark, book cafes, etc….. whilst others have active rolls behind the scenes looking after membership, accounts, clothing, website development, twitter, facebook, instagram, etc…..Thank you to each and every one of them, we wouldn’t be a club without you.
The secret to the clubs success is that we are just all normal ladies (ok well some of us are a bit bonkers!) with busy lives, family and work commitments. We are not super fit athletes, we are just a group of ladies who like to meet up and ride our bikes – we may also stop for a cuppa and cake a catchup and a giggle ………
Our club membership window is 1st April to 1st May (membership is closed for 2019/2020) but we have a waiting list which you can join by emailing the club. Any questions you have regarding the club and membership please use the email contacts below.
As a club we are committed to the inclusion and recognition of all members regardless of age, race, culture, ability*, ethnicity or nationality, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, marital status, religious affiliation and socioeconomic status.
We do identify as a Women’s Only Club however have connections with mixed sex clubs in the Yorkshire locality and are happy to introduce you if preferred, please contact us for details.
*Ability – we recognise and welcome ladies preferring to ride electric bikes. Fitness – if you are new to cycling and concerned about your ability we will discuss this with you and in some instances might suggest that you attend some local ‘Breeze’ sessions to help get you started before you join the club.
